On 12 April 2022, AMCOW's Executive Secretary, Dr Mbaziira, had an audience with Nigeria’s Minister of Water Resources, H E Eng Suleiman Adamu, the AMCOW Vice President, West Africa. He conveyed the AMCOW Governing Council’s acknowledgement of the Federal Government of Nigeria’s invaluable support to the Secretariat. Also discussed were the outcomes of the 9th Forum – the achievement of which benefited from His Excellency’s leadership of the AMCOW delegation.
As part of the following steps, H E Eng Adamu reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to implementing the AMCOW Host Agreement. Facilitating the construction of permanent AMCOW premises is high on the Government’s agenda for contributing to assuring a sustainable future for AMCOW. His Excellency will also be convening the West Africa AMCOW sub-regional Ministerial Committee meeting soon.
At the national level, AMCOW will be working with Nigeria’s Ministry of Water Resources to adopt the African Sanitation Policy Guidelines (ASPG) to strengthen the policy environment on sanitation and hygiene in Nigeria. Related activities include the operationalisation of a National Coordination Platform for reporting on the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG6) and the Africa Water Vision (AWV) 2025 through the AMCOW’s Water and Sanitation Sector Monitoring and Reporting (WASSMO) system.
During an initial visit to Federal Ministry of Water Resources Nigeria in March 2022, Dr Mbaziira was received by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs Esther Didi Walson-Jack, MNI. She commended the ongoing drive to inject new approaches into Africa’s efforts to attract commensurate funding to the sector. The occasion was marked with the handover of two new utility vehicles for ongoing activities to improve AMCOW’s operational efficacy.
