In July 2008, during the African Union (AU) Head of States and Governments (HoSGs) Summit held at Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt, AMCOW was mandated to annually monitor and report on progress achieved in the water and sanitation sector in Africa. In response to this mandate, AMCOW developed the Pan-African Water and Sanitation Sector Monitoring and Reporting System (WASSMO).
WASSMO is a web-based system and tool designed for member countries in setting specific national, sub-regional and regional targets, for information generation and assessment, knowledge dissemination for high-level advocacy and informed decision making, to accelerate the achievement of the Africa Water Vision 2025, the Sharm el Sheikh Commitments, the Sustainable Development Goals - SDG 6, and the water, sanitation and hygiene components of the AU Agenda 2063 strategic road map. The system collect data from Member Countries and generate report on the status of Water and Sanitation in Africa.
